Today’s writing prompt made me think of the Pyramid television game shows that have been around since 1973. In each round of the game a person gives clues to their partner in hopes of getting them to guess the answer, which is usually a phrase that starts with “Things that…”. The more answers the guesser gets the more money he or she wins. On the original show, hosted by Dick Clark, people could win up to $10,000. On the current version of the show, hosted by Michael Strahan, contestants can win up to $100,000.
The answer that the person guessing would have to give is “Things that get better with age.” And the giver of the clues would list off things like, wine, marriage, love, antiques, artwork, common sense, wisdom, and so forth.
All of the things listed above can also go bad as they get older. In this fallen there is nothing, really, that is guaranteed to get better with age. And everything, eventually will go bad. That is why it is a bit astonishing that the Bible speaks so confidently about things that last forever.
There’s
Isaiah 40:7–8: “Surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades,
And John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
The Bible acknowledges that things get old and perish and then confidently speaks of things that last forever, namely, things that are connected with and rely on our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In this world where everything ages Jesus, the Son of God, is the ageless one.
