The topic of abortion is dominating the upcoming 2024 US presidential election, and we are roughly 50 days from said election. Since I am strongly in favor of granting unborn children that same rights as those who are already born, these observations will all be from a life-affirming viewpoint.
Observation 1: Human beings are made in the image of God.
Humans are not creatures that have evolved from lower forms of life over billions of years. We were originally created in God’s image as the crown of his creation. This view comes from the Bible where it says:
“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” [27] So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:26-27, ESV)
“And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man. [6] “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.” (Genesis 9:5-6, ESV)
Although the image of God in humans is damaged because of sin, all of us, male and female, are the image bearers of God. And we bear the image of God from the moment of conception. We don’t somehow take on the image of God after we are born. Therefore, all of human life is to be protected and cherished.
