50 Observations About Abortion – Observation 2

The topic of abortion is dominating the upcoming 2024 US presidential election, and we are roughly 50 days from said election. Since I am strongly in favor of granting unborn children the same rights as those who are already born, these observations will all be from a pro-life viewpoint.

Observation 2: What the Bible says about unborn children

Here are some passages from the Bible that show that God knows us before we are born and has a plan for our lives.

“Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying,[5] ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.’” (Jeremiah 1:4-5, ESV)

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. [14] I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. [15] My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. [16] Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. (Psalm 139:13-16, ESV)

Perhaps the most striking story about the life of an unborn child comes from Luke, chapter one:

“In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, [40] and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. [41] And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, [42] and she exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! [43] And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? [44] For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. ‘” (Luke 1:39-44, ESV)

Elizabeth’s unborn baby heard Mary’s voice and leaped for joy. What a clear affirmation of the humanity of unborn children!

These passages make it clear that God knows children before they are born and has a plan for each of them. Taking the life an unborn child through abortion interferes with God’s plans for the child’s life.
