Think that all issues related to slavery were taken care at the time of the Civil War? Think again. Apparently in Colorado enslavement is still technically an allowable method to punish someone for a crime.

But if voters in Colorado approve Amendment A in November it will no longer be legal in Colorado to enslave someone as punishment for a crime.

This raises a few questions. Was this law ever used? Why is Colorado just now getting around to removing this provision from their constitution? How many other states still have slavery provisions in their constitutions? And finally, if enslavement was a way to punish people for their crimes would it reduce the crime rate, would it reduce overcrowding in our prisons?

Other issues that Coloradans will be voting on include fracking, redistricting, payday loans, campaign finance and the “Fix Our Damn Roads” initiative.
