The Predictions of Genesis

There are a number of things recorded in the book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible, that are confirmed by the physical world around us. Let’s look at four of these “predictions.”

Genesis chapter one, verse one says that the earth had a definite beginning; “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Scientific evidence from electromagnetism, radioisotopes, and genetics all can be used to show that the world came into existence roughly 6,000 years ago. Estimates based on the names and times mentioned in Genesis also indicate a world that is approximately 6,000 years old.

Genesis says that there was a fall into sin which caused the creation to be put under a curse. (3:1-19) The harmful effects of the curse of sin would accumulate the longer the world is under the influence of sin. Again evidence shows that the size of the human brain is shrinking and the human genome is deteriorating by as much as 1-2% per generation.

Genesis 6-8 tells of a worldwide flood in the days of Noah. The evidence left behind from such a cataclysmic event would be massive layers of sediment deposited around the world, evidence that creatures were buried violently and rapidly and that land creatures would be found buried with sea creatures. All this evidence has been found consistently throughout the world.

Genesis 11 speaks of the people of the world dispersing rapidly around the world after the Lord confused their language. Anthropologists who study human culture have found clear evidence of what they call a cultural “Big Bang” where cultures sprang up quickly around the world with no evidence of a slow accumulation of knowledge.

Furthermore, the histories and mythologies of many cultures reveal similarities consistent with the Biblical history – something that one would predict if the Biblical history is true. Numerous cultures believe that the first human was made from dirt, just as Genesis says. Many cultures believe that all people once had the same language, just as Genesis says. And perhaps the most popularly discussed similarities are with the Flood legends.

Since no one was around when the world was created we still must accept the Biblical record on faith. But the physical evidence in the world around us time and again confirms what we are told in Genesis.
